Great shots! I love it there.

What was the reason for the bustitution on the St. Charles line?

I was down in New Orleans in January and stayed in the Garden District. I took the St Charles streetcar several times and I'll be honest, the reliability is horrendous. Major bunching followed by 45+ minutes of nothing. I imagine they lost a good amount of the fleet in Katrina, but damn, can we get a tracking device on these things at least so customers can look on their phone how long til the next one? That being said, it was a really neat little throwback.

Your photos are excellent. I have a video of a ride on The St. Charles Line, it's a Ron Carson (R.I.P) production. It's wild how those cars operate, my hand would fall off turning that controller all day and working those brakes and doors. On the video, you can hear the compressors, I think he held the video-cam out the window......

If you're worried about reliability, New Orleans is not your town.

Anybody who's familiar knows I mean that in two senses.

The manual controller, brake and door working were pretty much state of the art for streetcars until the introduction of the PCC. Even M/M on the IRT Hi-Vs and Manhattan el cars had to deal with similar operation, minus of course the doors.

At least when you were there, most of the lines were back in operation. When I was there at the beginning of August, only a small part of the St Charles streetcar line was running, and the Waterfront line was running, and that was it. Although I didn't miss the red Dress Run :)

Very nice pictures. I rode the green cars in 1990 or '91. It was great to ride vintage cars in regular revenue service rather than at a museum.

I rode on the Pearly Thomas cars in 1994 along with the Riverfront line, which was still standard gauge at the time.

I didn't ride the Riverfront Line - I was there with a group of friends in 1991, but did get a picture of one of the cars with its red livery.

The Pearly Thomas cars? Is that the proper name for the green cars?
I described them by color in my other post, since I never did any further reading or research about them.

I'd wanted to take an afternoon and go over to the shops, but didn't have time, it was just a weekend visit.

The cars were built by the Perley A. Thomas Car Works in Highpoint NC.

The company still exists as Thomas Built Buses, Inc. which is owned by Daimler Benz
