Posted by Larry,RedbirdR33 on Mon Aug 31 07:10:48 2015 Tuscarora Almanac for August 281 – August 28, 1939 - The Book of First Runs The 23rd Street – Ely Avenue Station on the IND Queens Line opens. (Thanks to Mr. Stephen Bauman for this). 2 - August 28, 1991 - The Book of Wrecks A southbound No. 4 Lexington Avenue Express derails north of 14 Street - Union Square Station while switching from the express to local tracks. The crash killed five passengers and injured over two hundred. The consist was a ten car train of R-62s; (s)1440 - 1439 - 1437 - 1436 - 1435 - 1434 - 1432 - 1431 - 1433 - 1438. 1437 was cut if half by the collision and scrapped. 1435,1436, 1439 and 1440 and were badly damaged and not returned to service. Source: NYD Bulletin September and October 1991. 3 - August 28, 2009 - The Book of Last Runs The last pair of R-40M's in service was 4484 - 4485. They ran in a mixed consist with R-42's on the "V" Queens - 6th Avenue Local on August 28, 2009. The consist was (n) 4752-3, 4660-1, 4485-4, 4720-1, 4763-2.
