Salaam is a LACTMA skeptic. For lots of good reasons. This line extension is supposed to open in about 8 months yet they haven't yet received any of the new rail cars needed to open it. Even this past week the blue/expo lines had to reduce some trains to 2 cars during rush hour because of a car shortage. They can hardly run what's there now. The car shortage is expected to be a problem.

Typical LACMTA. I'm convinced that they changed their branding to Metro (which I refuse to use), since the name MTA is mud in L. A. (IMHO)

IIRC, San Diego sent the "best" U2s down to Mendoza, Argentina for that city's new light rail system. FWIW, they wouldn't be much good on LACMTA given that LACMTA aped the high floor approach of the Frankfurt Stadtbahn, and San Diego's units are designed for low floor operation. You'd be better off asking Calgary for their high floor units, and that even presumes that they'd meet LACMTA's clearance and platform height standards, and that Calgary would part with their (beat up from thirty years of winter operation) units any time soon.

Ironic, new cars for Calgary will be made in Sacramento Calif. LA should piggy back an order on the Calgary order.

Calgary Transit, the public transit service operated by the city of Calgary, Canada, has entered into a contract with Siemens Canada to supply 60 new S200 rail cars.

The new cars will cost C$200m ($193.7m), with C$133m ($128.8m) funds coming from Provincial Green TRIP funding and another C$67m ($64.9m) from previously approved funds.

Each light rail vehicle (LRV) will cost about C$3.2m ($3.1m), with the first new vehicle scheduled to be delivered in August 2015.

The full order of 60 cars will be completed by December 2016.

The S200 air-conditioned vehicles will have a new design, look and features to improve the passenger experience with an aim to enhance comfort, passenger information, reliability, security and accessibility.

According to the city of Calgary, the new cars are three to four times more reliable than the old U2 trains, and enable future four-car CTrain operation and the replacement of the oldest U2 LRVs in the fleet.

The vehicles will be manufactured in Sacramento, California, at a Siemens Industry plant.

"The full order of 60 cars will be completed by December 2016."

Calgary Transit has been looking for a new, long-term strategic partner for the supply of future light rail vehicles since December 2012.

Siemens Canada emerged as the highest rated bidder among the competing companies, including Bombardier, CAF, Hyundai Rotem and Kinki Sharyo.

RouteAhead, Calgary Transit's strategic plan, identified the need for the LRV fleet to increase from 192 to 390 in the coming 30 years to achieve targets, including four-car train service.

More than 300,000 people use Calgary Transit's light rail transit system, CTrain, every weekday.

The network's entire U2 fleet is close to retirement, with 32 cars now exceeding their planned life.
