|
Posted by Elkeeper on Tue Jul 28 14:36:29 2015 Why did the MTA remove the straps/handles from all rebuilt cars, except the Redbirds? |

What is interesting about straps vs bars is that the first IRT postwar equipment, the R-12s through 15s had bars instead of straps. With the R-17s, the TA went back to straps which continued until the R-62s. When the R-12s through 15s were transferred from the Flushing Line the TA didn’t allow them in service until small buslike strap were attached to the bars. Why the TA don’t want cars without straps on the mainline, I never quite figured out. In any case I found it strange that after the TA spent the money to install straps on cars that didn’t have them, it later decided to do away with straps altogether and go to bars on all new equipment and even the BMT/IND GOHed equipment. |
