Did the connection between the 6 and the N/R/Q exist at 59/Lex exist prior to the opening of the 4/5 Express station at that location? The free transfer point between the IRT at 59th Street and the BMT at Lexington Avenue opened on July 1, 1948. Yes, the free transfer between the #6 and the BMT trains that stopped at the Lexington Avenue station in 1948 - NOT the #4 or #5 express trains which went direct from 42nd Street-Grand Central to the 86th Street station. So yes the free-transfer PRE-DATED the construction of the #4 & #5 express level platforms, escalators, mezzanine access, etc. In the mid-1970's when I traveled that station frequently is was easy to tell the older parts of the station from the newer parts.
