Low ridership, even during the War?The NYC claimed that they were losing $71,000 annually on the line. The court allowed the cessation of passenger service but did not allow the Central to scrap the line. So for about a year of so a thousand tons of usable steel went unused. Larry, RedbirdR33 |

From what I understand, yes- even then. I think the line should have been purchased jointly by NYC and Yonkers- and incorporated into the IND. A one seat right from Getty Square into all Manhattan and beyond, not just GCT, would be very useful today. On top of that, SW Yonkers is now, and probably was then, quite urban, and could use a subway or subway-like railroad. Oh well. |

After Unification and IND construction (pre-war) there was no money to buy anything. Plus, LaGuardia wanted no part of regional transportation. After the City bought the NYW&B Dyre Ave section, he was approached by Westchester County officials to extend the line into their county. He flatly rejected the offer. |

The most significant, and definitely not good, things that La Guardia can be remembered for are getting rid of streetcars and allowing Robert Moses to accrue enough power to destroy many NY City neighborhoods. |

Moses' plan for a Brooklyn-Battery bridge still makes me cringe. The on/off ramps would have obliterated Battery park, but he didn't care. |
