Originally, all glazing back then had the chickenwire in it with the belief that it would help keep broken glass together. It's very difficult and expensive to find it nowadays. My bet is that the glass with the chickenwire in it is original and the clear glass was all they could find to restore the car. |

Yep ... once safety glass was properly done into the 1950's, they found that the chicken wire really wasn't as safe as they thought. |

As I recall, the earlier cars didn't have the horizontal bar.Somewhere I have a list of differences among various groups of R1s - R9s, but I don't know where it is. Things like the horizontal bar, reinforcement under the doors (none, center doors, all doors); indentations in the doors; upper and lower or lower only door pocket windows. |

The split windows were on the 7's and 9's, and chicken wire was the original shipments. When front glass got broken, it was usually replaced with ordinary safety glass from the 1950's onward. |

Chicken wire glass is around, but it is getting really expensive in larger pieces and you have to make sure the architects don't snag it first. Old Good Things used to have a nice supply from salvaged NYC industrial windows. You might have to look out in the rust belt to find big enough pieces nowadays.Of course, you could make a decal that looks like chicken wire glass and apply it between two pieces of safety glass, but that's alot of work. |

So if a rock or cinder block hit the cab windshield, it would shatter like a regular window pane? Many many years ago, I was at the storm door of a Triplex. As it was approaching Prospect Park, a large object hit the window. Fortunately, no glass went flying. |

It's supposed to shatter and stay in place, just like the windshield of a car. Safety glass is two panes of thin glass with adhesive between the layers. Normal windows aren't built that way, they're generally a single pane of glass if that helps. |

By the time you were in the cab, Most of the R-7/9s were out on the Three Stooges Division while the R-6s and remaining R-7s were out in Queens. |
