Posted by Allan on Mon Jun 29 19:11:41 2015 I could not find any thread on this (I might have missed it) but on June 1, 1940 the City of NY officially took over the assets of the Brooklyn-Manhattan Transit Company and on June 12,1940 the assets of the Interborough Rapid Transit Company, thus creating a unified transit system along with the City-owned Independent Subway System.A slightly belated Happy 75th Unification Anniversary to the NYC Subway. |

The assets of the Interborough were taken over on June 12th, 1940, not the BMT's. The Manhattan Elevated's assets, which had been leased by the IRT in 1903, were taken over in a sepatate purchase on June 11th, 1940. |
