R110A car 8010

Spotted this briefly at the north end of 207th Street Yard yesterday...

Not that great of a photo. Yet I thought seeing the car there by itself was pretty interesting sitting among some vintage vehicles. The other A-unit cars are still on the other side of the yard by the river.

Indeed! It's been a while since seeing a totally intact R110A car (at least what this looks like to me from where I shot the photo).

Aye...

At least with the new track work being put in place, the PCC's (and others) in the collection can take a jog around the yard! Oh my...

I think Branford's next rapid transit acquisition should be a pair of R32's. I do have some non-existent money to spend.

Not sure. I certainly want to know more. From what information I was able gather however - of the four A-units, car 8005 was completely gutted out.

Two cars were in various states of dismantlement, from what I gathered. I don't know the car numbers, what was dismantled, nor how much dismantling was done, but I do remember that seats were listed on the TA's website as collectibles for sale some months ago.

Then there was one car that was still completely intact. Perhaps this is that car?

So Uncle Kev, who do ya think were the biggest railfans of the day on Saturday? You have two choices:

1) The guys chasing down the AB's with cameras in hand; OR

2) The guys moving the AB's?

SOME of the operating personnel are railfans too. Must have been an interesting experience for a few of them!

I saw who was in the rear cab on that AB. :)

The serious ones get involved with restoration, and helping to pay for it. I'll leave it there. As to those moving them, it IS a volunteer gig, subject to approval. You need to qualify for it to be in it.

And I do consider myself a serious railfan, LONG AGO (perhaps in the not so distant past?) I contributed manpower and money to an El Car as well as a SMEE.

Maintaining a one of a kind fleet with necessary parts that were made as prototypes is the most expensive waste of money of them all. You have to have everything that breaks made custom.

Indeed! While I can understand the desire to see them used, I can also understand how difficult it is to maintain oddballs in the fleet with a short supply of spare parts. That's what happened the R11/34's, the Triplexes, Bluebirds and many others. Just not enough of them or parts for the economics to work. Fortunately a handful were saved and in rare usage such as museum fleet, we still have a few samples around.

If they'd continued to be run in revenue though, they'd be toast.

At one point, I had heard that the TA was planning on making the R-110A compatible with either the R-142s or 142As but it apparently gave up on that idea. the problem with trying to use the R-110A on the GC Shuttle is that the maximum length train that can be ru on the shuttle is 4 cars and that is only on Tk 3. Tk 1 and Tk 4 can only hold 3 cars. The Franklin Shuttle is a different story and it probably would have been possible to have the R-110B units as a dedicated fleet for the Fkln much like the BMT Zephyr or the CTA artics on the Skokie Swift.
