I never understood that. In fact a few years later when the R-12, 14 and even the 15s were retrofitted with the smaller radio antennas that were used on the BMT/IND cars, the IRT supt chose not to lift the ban except for the 3 Av el.

Rode out to Rockaway Park today in time to see the first PM Rockaway Park A Train terminate at Rock Park, leave the station, then lay-up on one of the side tracks to wait for morning service. I would imagine "E" trains did the same thing in the '60s and 70s????

Is there, or was there, ever any course on NYC subway history given to transit workers in training?

ah, yes. How places get named. There was a crossover location on the Milwaukee Rd Dubugue and Illinois Division a mile or so west of the town of Mount Carroll. When I was in colleghe there in the early 60s there was no Red Barn, but apparently there had been 70 years before.
