Yes it should have a staffed counter, but it should also be lined with vending machines, everything from drinks to sandwiches, deserts and ice cream. |

Amtrak workers are entirely in a different ballpark, are union, and get good benes. |

One half of the car had 10 full size tables that are larger than those in the Superliner Dining Cars. The other side of the car had 3 similar tables. Each table could seat 4 full size adults or up to 6 younger children. It was an ex-UP coach that had been previouslyconverted to a table car. The automat car was discontinued some time in the 1990's, IIRC. The Auto Train also offered automat cars. Southern Pacific tried Automat diners in the 1960s. |

If you were waited on at, say, a restaurant, and the service was decent or better, you are obligated to provide a gratuity of at least 15-20%. (Some say you should provide a gratuity regardless, but that's debatable.) For straight pick up service, though, there is no such obligation, and TransitChuckG is perfectly within his rights to not leave a tip, regardless of the reason. |

When I eat on my Amtrak train, I purchase food from the cafe car, and if I can, eat it at one of the tables in the cafe car. On the Carolinian, most times half the cafe car seats are filled with Amtrak employees, they sit towards the front next to the business car, so you look for table seat in the other half. I've ridden a few times when the train is oversold, and passengers are sitting the entire trip in the cafe car, so you take your food back to your seat. |

It's gotten better in some ways, worse in others. The cities themselves are emptying out, but the surroundings are turning into Long Island until you get WAY out of town. It's nice out here. :)Arsenal is still going strong, Green Island is mostly scrap businesses now, but they did go completely "off grid". Mystery solved!Up until 2003, both the NYP and BOS sections had a diner car. Depending on which section was in the lead when the train was assembled in Rensselaer to head west, only ONE of the cars would head west and the other would be sent back. The send back was usually on the next NYP eastbound since they ran more often, thus it was the Bostom diner that continued on to Chicago. In 2003, budget cuts stripped off the Boston diner entirely and it was replaced with a lounge car until 2008. As of 2008, it got a plain old club car except during the busy season when it would again get a diner car for most runs. And again, one diner would get dropped off at Rensselaer, more often than not the Boston one. Hope this helps, just inquired of a buddy who is one of the conductor pool for that run. |

False.Depending on the number of bookings, it would be everything from a cafe car to a full blown Heritage diner. All depended on the time of year and how well-booked the train was. Diners appeared far less frequently on the run though after the early 1990's. |
