I have a framed notice of that service extension. Can't say for sure if it's an original or a facsimile. Since my upper IND destination curtain has Jamaica-169th St. (not to mention Jamaica-Parsons Blvd. and Queens-Kew Gardens, I've signed it as an Ethel between 169th and Church Ave. before. |

Wouldn't made more sense for the IRT to use standard Lo - V's without the trailers in the Steinway tunnels without using an underpowered car? I |

They did that as well when there weren't enough Steinway cars to meet the service requirements. Of course I wasn't around to see it first hand. |

The idea of a differently geared car was not so much to attain speed but to insure that the cars could negotiate the grades in the Steinway Tunnel. Some time after the first Steinways operated, it was discovered that the gearing on the conventional Lo-Vs and Hi -Vs was actually at least as good as if not better than Steinway gearing, but the IRT found it cheaper to continue ordering cars with Steinway gearing rather than converting the Steinways to standard Lo-V gearing. |
