I believe that the Denver installation is the first brand new electrified commuter rail (assuming its under FRA jurisdiction) that has opened in the US since 1931, when the original EMU services were begun on the Reading and the Lackawanna.

The LIRR, NY Central, New Haven, and PRR EMU services all began between 1905 and 1915. The Illinois Central was put under wire in 1926.

*his name derivation made a reference to leet - also something I'm not familiar with, so I skimmed the Wiki article on that as well = impressive.

You might want to also groove on some of the folks I hung with years ago back when Bob Moog was selling electronic cat stranglers. Heh. My compatriots in crime that I engineered and collaborated with were Jean Jacques Perrey (lots of amusing videos on google from back then) along with Gershon Kingsley and John Cage. So strangling cats with keyboards always came natural to me, I loved my Hammond B3. Joel is keeping that alive and quite popular doing it. A large volume of his work has been public domained since his thing is live shows.

I refuse to grow up. (grin)

I spent many years repairing them. Motor-driven "tone wheel" with sorta like gears on a rod, that's what determined the tones with magnetic pickups. And spinning Leslie speakers. The PERFECT instrument! :)

And yeah, enough Moog, especially the way Jean Jacques delighted in pushing the weirdness to its limits sure did influence me. Heh.

BTW: Here's the innards of the motor-driven Hammond B3 tonewheel assembly with the tonewheels, their magnetic pickups for each note and the gears that drove the works. :)

Best part of Hammonds of that vintage was the interesting sounds (like a bagpipe) as the motor came up to speed. Eventually. (grin)

Hammond B3 + Leslie = one of the best, most versatile and enduring sound machines ever built. The fact that it surfaced in so many places, and in so many different genres of music, and is still beloved today says it all. Nothing that size could ever touch it.

That's incredible!! I had NO IDEA they were building something like this...

Other cities are expanding (WMATA) their systems, and others starting new from scratch (RTD, apparently). And here, we can't get relatively simple stuff, like restoring the North Shore line on Staten Island and using the East Bronx (NE Corridor?) line for regular service.

While we spend 86 years on the SAS, other cities get the job DONE.

I should check out Jean Jacques and others you recommended.

My listening has been to naturally, Jimmy Smith, some Brother Jack McDuff, Brian Auger, Larry Young etc.

Always liked the way Ian McLagan played it with the Small Faces - I was told that you get that cool growling sound when the tubes are old or just about shot & need replacement.

To others - thread just went off topic...sorry

That happens sometimes. :)

Kim and Vince Martell used to come to our studio to play with all those toys. You might know them as the "Vanilla Fudge". So yeah, even "traditional" musicians liked honks and squeaks. And to put it on topic however briefly, if the NTT trains were around then, I'm sure they would have sampled the windup of the motors and used it in some tunes.

Actually ... if you hold down any of the bottom keys and fire one up, the tone wheel motor does take about a minute to get up to speed. One of the things that made me fall in love with the B3 ages ago was that you could DO just that! :)

And through a pair of spinning Leslies, even better!

We have a lot of opportunity in Colorado, and when it comes to major capital projects we have several major advantages over large older cities (mostly due to no fault of their own). We also have a major delay in one of our projects. Most importantly we have lots of land on which to build, with a tiny fraction of the property acquisition needed (at much lower cost) than other places. We have UP and BNSF hubs right next to downtown Denver (Denver Union Station) which helped with right of way. We had an abandoned trolley line from the 50's for which the right of way was still available. We had a central valley interstate that was in need of reconstruction anyway. We have a transportation district to which people from elsewhere in the State do not belong and therefore did not have to agree to nor pay the taxes to help pay for the project. We have relatively lower labor costs and somewhat inexpensive energy costs. We had the foresight to annex an immense part of a neighboring county for the express purpose of building a new airport with plans to eventually link it to DUS, and right of way that was preserved for 30 years until we were in a position to build. In short we were forward thinking, we had relatively low taxes, lots of luck, and natural blessings.

The delayed project is the Northwest Line to Boulder and Longmont. When the original FastTracks tax was passed, energy and supply costs were a third of what they are now. This is a 35 mile EMU served line that is probably 20 years off into the future from the stand-point of funding. It was put on the backburner due to unexpected cost increases (imagine that). Bus BRT along Highway 36 (including an almost complete reconstruction and expansion) was the tradeoff and will be completed this summer. That's a topic for another post and I will be fascinated to learn how much increased bus ridership will result. In defense of RTD, this line was the most expensive to build in terms of construction and right of way acquisition costs. It will be built along a mostly single track right of way with BNSF. It will require the rebuilding and expansion of MANY bridges and large curving embankments in difficult terrain. It might be though, the heaviest traveled corridor as Boulder patronage would be considerable with the University, and a population of people who are as public transportation and environmentally inclined as they come. RTD tossed the NW side of the metropolitan area a bone by building a 6.2 mile EMU served spur to Westminster which will be the jumping-off point to further NW extension when/if it ever happens.

The line is cab signaled so I don't know why the 79mph thing applies anymore.
