For The Tuscarora Almanac - March 27, 1976 -The Book Of First Runs |

Posted by milantram on Fri Mar 27 10:32:07 2015 On this date in 1976, WMATA, the Washington, DC region's transit agency, opened the first segment of Metrorail. Five stations on what is now the Red Line opened: Farragut North, Metro Center, Judiciary Square, Union Station and Rhode Island Avenue. This was the beginning of what is now is a 118-mile system and six lines, with more to be added when the Silver Line is extended to Dulles International Airport. The underground stations are of a vault-like, waffle-ceiling design by Chicago architect Harry Weese, and are examples of late 20th Century modernist architecture. The early stations on above-ground portions of the lines featured a gull-wing look, but newer parts have become more traditional in architecture. DC's Metrorail system was the second new system to apply distance-based fare structures using fare cards (BART was the first). It now has the second-highest ridership of any rapid transit system in the U.S., with 860,000 average riders carried on weekdays. At this time, there are 1,126 subway cars in Metrorail's fleet, purchased in seven groups. Source: The Story Of Metro, by Ronald H. For The Tuscarora AlmanacWhat's the point? Larry,RedbirdR33 said that because there are so many posts on this forum, he can't find the "Post A New Message" link to make his Tuscarora Almanac posts. The situation seems dire and hopeless. The end is near. A forum has too many posts. What's next, a subway line with too many trains? A bus route with too much service? |

This information is for everybody on this forum, Brian. A few months ago, I asked Larry if I could contribute items for the Almanac from outside the New York area, especially the West Coast, where I have a lot of expertise and follow news items closely, and he approved wholeheartedly. Quite frankly, there has been a paucity of information of this nature from outside the New York Metropolitan area.I feel that I'm providing a helpful service for interested members of this forum, just as Larry has been doing when he established the Almanac. And I enjoy doing this, as I am a transit historian by nature. And I really appreciate Larry,RedbirdR33's Almanac posts. I'm sorry that you don't. So it's not just about you, and what many perceive is your resentment toward presenting factual, real information, and your need to challenge why this is being done. So crawl back under your rock, and stew. I'm going to continue to help Larry out as needed. The Almanac is not going to disappear! Milantram (Peter Ehrlich) |

Actually, he posts on "The Unofficial Metro-North Railroad" Facebook page a lot. But he's very good over there! Usually post pics. |
