The room is 24 x 27, there are three levels along the east and south walls. There is really only one route, from 242nd street to South Ferry and back. The tower operator (hey, that's me) must control the railroad as trains arrive and depart 242nd Street. For the rest of their journey the Little Plastic Motorman is in control, making all of the stops etc. At them moment I am only running two train sets at a time, since the other four are in the shop awaiting modification.

There are two express loops (one train set each -- the red sets) one north and one south. They appear and disappear at Nevins Street in the south and at Lenox Avenue in the north. There is a Secret Tunnel filled with rats and other assorted monsters that connects these two stations together.

There are 14 scale miles of track, nine on the local and five total on the express. It takes (as you have seen in the video) 18 minutes, 45 seconds for the local to make its round trip, it takes about 5 minutes for the express trains to make a loop. When I add the timers to Nevins and Lenox it will take longer, but maybe someday I can afford a second train set running on each of those loops.

Trains operate automatically, there are over 300 relays controlling the movement of trains and the operation of signals. The entire array of signals between stations function as only a single signal, thus they do not fall to red until the train arrives at the next station. This of course is not prototypical, but it will have to do, it was hard enough (and expensive enough) to install these relays, another thousand relays are really out of the question.

Also, Antonio Luciano, the plastic motorman, takes some of those curves a tad fast. That might come to grief one day.

At the moment the trains do not actually stop at those stations. I want to get my TPH up, and since those stations are not decorated yet there is no point in stopping there. But eventually the stations will be finished, and I will want the trains to stop there.

The timer in this case just holds the dwell time for the station. There is a master timer on the relay board with a 1 rpm cycle. There are six 10 second pulses that pull the local starting relays IF the next station is clear. If it is not clear, there is a red signal and the starting relay is cut out.

Once those two stations are put in play, I'd want another two train sets on the express tracks just to keep the TPH up.

I'll see what train sets I can buy when I come yeast.

Some many nights ago, I dreamed I was stationed at Castle Black except it was on 168th & Broadway and the wall was made of concrete.

We ended up having to fight this thing (except without the face) which means my subconscious is apparently trying to write crossover fan fiction.

The moral of the story is that concrete is a better building material than ice.

The third rail is a 1/8th" square strip of basswood, it is painted brown on the top to represent the protection board, and black on the sides to represent the shadow under the protection board. It is held on place with nails on top of a small glass bead.

Not really. The Left Rail is GROUND, the right rail is +10.2v dc, if the voltage on the right rail is negative, the train would go in reverse, but of course subway trains do not go in reverse, so no reversing switches.

The 242nd Street terminal is basically not powered. The arrangement of the crossover will determine which main line they will get their power from. The gap entering 242nd Street is bridged by a rectifier, so trains entering the station stop, and when aligned to the outbound track will pass power to the train.

Entrance and exit from 242nd street station is closely interlocked with the tower.

Downtown tracks are downtown tracks, uptown tracks are uptown tracks, throughout the left rail is ground. A downtown express train can be moved to the local track and go around the loop at South Ferry, but then it is an uptown train, and if switched back to the express tracks it would be on the uptown loop. To get back onto a downtown track it would need to go the the Coney Island or 242nd Street stations to reverse direction again.

Power is applied to the main lines, not to the terminals. Terminals get their power from the track that they are aligned to.
