Because Desilu obviously picked up on the cheap clips from that film the BoT made in 1948.....the title of which escapes me at this time |

The exterior shot of the AA R-1/9 train is stock footage that was used in several movies and TV shows including a Superman episode where Superman stops a runaway train merely by breaking the 3rd rail. One of the exterior shots is of a train of Lo-Vs and the later shot is a train of H-Vs. |

It seems to be a hybrid of an R-1/9 and a BMT steel. The roll signs are clearly based on the R-1/9 design, and o the panel next to the roll sign there is what appears to be a BMT style roll sign box from a steel that is blanked out. the doors to the right of the roll sign are clearly based on the BMT steels but the doors on the left are R-1/9 style with the addition of the 2 lower door panel windows which the steels had. The indentations on the actual R-1/9 doors seem to indicate that the B of T might have considered actually having those lower windows but dropped them in the final design. In Fact, now that I think about it, a photo I have of an R-1 mockup does show the side doors with the additional lower windows. |

But it's not Main St that the train is leaving, because the wall tiles in the clip don't have the Main St tablets on them. It looks like 5 Av. |

Another memorable TV episode that I recall clearly featuring the subway was RHODA MORGENSTERN'S WEDDING (1974)!!. Rhoda literally had to board the #6 at 68th Lex, and get off (of camera at Mt. Eden/ Jerome), climb those stairs and run to her WEDDING at her Mom's house on the Grand Concourse!!! |

The show was shot and produced in Hollywood. The Desilu honchos, which included Lucy and Desi, probably couldn't give a horse's patoot if the exterior shots made any sense. |
