Tuscarora Almanac - March 28, 1962 - The Book of First Runs

The first of the brand new R-29 Redbirds make a spectacular entry in to New York City on a barge headed up the East River. They are given the traditional fire-boat welcome and other vessels in the harbor sounded their whistles and horns in salute.

Yes but they made a grand entrance. The Redbirds and the Bluebirds set a new standard for the subway. The 60's were a great time to be a railfan in NYC.

At a CERA mtg, the "news" before the main presentation had a slide of a red IRT car which the announcer described as "New York has a new color for dirt".

Well, at the time Chicago actually washed the cars on the outsides and cleaned the interiors. The dirt on the R1/9s was so thick it was 2-3 years after moving to NYC that I actually once was able to make out "City of New York" lettering on one. The remark was totally justified IMHO.

"The dirt on the R1/9s was so thick..."

This is true. However after a few washings, they started to rust up & develop bodyrot. I guess an unintended consequence of all that dirt was corrosion protection.

Jim: It had to be Oak Point. The barge sailed down the Hudson to the Battery then up the East River to Hunts Point. I do recall seeing the Bluebirds on the old NYW&B el structure south of 180th Street.

I read this same thing in a NY Times article sometime during the mid-60s about one of the new car washing stations at the time, I think at 207. The article said something like: now that the older cars are being washed, they may start showing rust/ corrosion.

Sometimes one has to take a break. Its been a long winter.
But you said recently that you haven't been making Tuscarora Almanac posts because there were too many posts on this forum. So what has changed that has now allowed you to start making these posts again? Perhaps the reason you originally provided was not entirely truthful? That would be my guess. And that would be a damn shame. Because that would mean you are willing to lie and place undeserved blame on others.
