"Cause unknown, but Consistent with a gas explosion."

The pictures are amazing.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/03/26/east-village-explosion_n_6950116.html

An explosion rocked an East Village building in Manhattan Thursday, causing the building to collapse and sending plumes of smoke down Second Avenue.

Injuries were reported at the building, which is located on Second Avenue near E. 7th Street, DNA Info reports. An FDNY spokesperson told The Huffington Post that one injured person was transported to an area hospital and other patients were evaluated on scene.

The building could be seen fully engulfed in flames just before 4 p.m., and a fire department spokesman said the fire spread to at least two other buildings.

Miles Barber, a cook at Mighty Quinn's restaurant nearby, told HuffPost that the explosion felt "like an earthquake." He and fellow employees evacuated the restaurant as hundreds of onlookers crowded the streets. Police closed off 6th and 7th streets near the explosion.

The cause wasn't immediately clear, but authorities said that it was consistent with a gas explosion.

ABC News reports:

The FDNY arrived on the scene to find a restaurant on the lower level collapsed and smoke pluming throughout the building. Then flames began shooting through the roof and quickly spread to a neighboring building.

Firefighters were pouring water onto the flames, but they had to pull back due to the intensity, fire officials expected both buildings would eventually fall.

Evacuations were underway at all adjoining buildings, and charred rubble littered the sidewalk.

The incident comes just days after New York City marked the one-year anniversary of a deadly building explosion in Harlem. A gas leak caused the blast, leveling two buildings, killing eight people and injuring dozens of others.

It's one block north of the former site. Fillmore East was at 105 2nd ave. This building is at 121 (same side of the street).

The link given in OT, shows an aerial shot - a little to the lower left of the smoking site, you can see the original "smallish" white building that was the theater's entrance building (now hosting an Emigrant bank), and behind it, the apartment building that replaced the theater space itself.

-------------------------------------------------
that said, looking at the aerial shot of the smoking building, or any aerial shot like this in Manhattah, you can't help but be sadly remineded of 9/11.

Gas explosion - 12 people injured, critically- extremely sad. I hope they all can survive.

I can tell I'm old. You mention places I don't know. When I lived/worked in that area B&H Dairy, Ratner's, the Paradox, were my food haunts as well as Koh-I-Noor the first place I ate Indian food.

Yes. Virage at the NE corner of 7th and 2nd is maybe 10 years old; San Marzano at the SW corner is where Kiev used to be and is only 1-2 years old.

Oh yeah, the Blaine Hotel, where guests on NBC's Saturday Night (as SNL was originally known) stayed initially. :)

At least you can find some humor in what was an otherwise horrific situation. :(

And there are people I know who think this might wind up derailing the SAS entirely because now they will have to look at ALL of the gas lines in NYC as a result of this and find a way to make the aftereffects of that explosion preventing the SAS from ever running.

Not if it turns out that it was due to people monkeying with the gas inside the building. Besides, subway construction is an opportunity to renew the underground infrastructure.
