Based on observations I'm hearing, an update is rolling out to the R-188 sets. Most likely this update adds Hudson Yards - 34 Street as a destination in the AAS, and also has a few visual tweaks.Queens-bound expresses are now announced as such in Manhattan, and the interior signs finally show the appropriate <7> where applicable. The station names are also displayed differently, such as "74 ST-BROADWAY" instead of just "74 ST". |

The side sign text for destinations other than Main Street have also changed.Flushing-Main Street Old: 7 FLUSHING–MAIN ST New: 7 MAIN ST Times Square Old: 7 TIMES SQ–42 ST New: 7 TIMES SQ Hunters Point Avenue Old: 7 HUNTERS POINT AV New: 7 HUNTERS PT I've yet to see Mets-Willets Point, 111th Street, 74th Street-Broadway, or Queensboro Plaza shown on the new programs, but I wouldn't be surprised if these got the same "excessive blank space" treatment. |

Yeah, I can only assume that these exterior reading changes were done to make it clear which trains still need updating. Like the past practice of adding or removing "TO" from the R-142(A)s. |

Though I don't understand why they just don't assign a letter to each update (in a manner similar to what's done at airports), then have trains display that letter when they're brought into the yard. |

OK, so why are they shortening all the station designations like this? The displays clearly have room for longer names, but maybe there are more possible things that can be displayed than previously, and using longer forms for all of them would not fit in available memory? |

The 44s and 46s with their side signs from 1990 can display four lines of text quite easily. The 142s and 142As with their computers from the early 2000s are currently programmed for nearly 300 route options and still manage to show long lines of text readings on three lines. Don't tell me that the brand new 188s with brand new computers and software can't display more than ten characters per line of text. |

It didn't sound right to me either, I was just speculating. I knew they had displayed longer lines. I meant that the total storage capacity for holding all possible displays might be some kind of limit, but it still doesn't sound that likely. |

It appears to have been a mistake in the programming by the vendor. The readings we're seeing were programmed in for other purposes, but were *not* supposed to display on the exterior signs.I doubt another update will be rolled out specifically to fix this, but it should be corrected hopefully in a future update. |

Sounds like it would make a great article for a Headlights or a Division Bulletin - perhaps with a retrospective summary of this kind of signage on the recent cars.Thanks. |

I forgot these are technically new cars, so we have to deal with vendor updates for a while. Here's to hoping they update them as part of the system-wide transfer announcement update that has to be done to reflect the full-time extension of the J to Broad St this June. They probably won't since the 7 doesn't touch the J, but one can dream. This "short-hand" crap has got to go. I was over it when it came to the "text-speak" service signs hanging over the platforms.Taking a shot in the dark, I'd like to think these "readings" were meant to be only in the internal coding for reference purposes. |
