Yesterday I rode the J line out to Woodhaven for the first time in about 5 years. I rode two R-42's which were in very bad shape esthetically.
But they were toasty warm!
It got me to think, it the R-44's were not retired early, and the R-32 & R-42's were retired instead, What would the fleet look like on the J,Z,& C lines? Would they have run 4 car R-46's on the east?

No.
There would be an all 160 fleet operating there.
The 46 cannot travel along the Fulton st portion due to the sharp curves.
A planned rebuild/relocation was dropped due to community opposition.

That strech between Norwood St & Elderts Lane is the dealbreaker for 75ft equiptment on the J/Z

There would be more R160s on the J/Z and with more R46s on Queens Blvd and R44s on the C with R44 & R46 on the A.

They can. Except on the super curvy section on the J/Z east of Myrtle Avenue all the way until Jamaica Center.

The mere fact that the S curve by Crescent Street exists justifies the moratorium on 75' equipment. The ends of the sides of the things would be tore to shreds should they pass each other on the curve.

Thank you, so they would take R-160's from the F and turn them into 4 car sets for the east and send more r-46's to the F?

The curve at Crescent is actually not the problem since the tracks are sufficiently far apart to clear. The problem is with 2 trains of 75 ft cars trying toppers on the S curve coming off the Willy B near Marcy. Those tracks are close enough to cause passing trains of 75 ft cars to foul if they happen to be passing at the same time.

It’s the car length that causes the problem, not the train length.

R46 cars were repaired at ENY DO shops back in the eighties...and nineties.
I myself saw a few four car trains coming and going standing at Myrtle/Bway...
Bottom line, the cars Can travel along the Nassau tunnel, over the bridge and along Broadway as far as ENY yard....but Not over Fulton st.

Did the curve at Marcy nearest the bridge get made a wider radius when the structure was rebuilt ? Inbound trains seem to go faster around it than decades ago.

I’m really not sure. It would have made sense to do it which is probably why it wasn’t done.
