They're former Alaskan Railroad Geeps (rebuilt GP7s IINM) and the cars were former Espee Gallery Cars from Caltrain modified to look a bit like Superliners.

The train was put together in Fillmore, CA before being sent east to Colorado for filming. From where I was in Santa Clarita, Fillmore was on the way to the beach, and in early 1994 the train stuck out like a sore thumb amongst the F&W's motley collection of older cars and locomotives. But at the time Metrolink was running GO equipment with F59PHs, FP7Us, and Amtrak F40PHs, so it wasn't clear if this was just another train to assist with Metrolink service after the Northridge quake or something else entirely.
