Oh I agree, and NOW that would NEVER happen and any family member expected to "keep in line" by a relative or religious head because the person being "kept in line" was trying to do his job would be told the people trying to do his job has to check in and that 2010 happened because of people like such relatives and religious heads whether such likes it or not.

The problem was, the attitudes in a lot of ways prior to the Christmas 2010 blizzard such where it may not have been always possible and might have even led to some divorces if they did "do their job" because of inflexible some relatives in particular might very well have been in 2010. That storm was I believe a wake-up call for a lot of people you can't take monitoring forgranted and there have been many changes since then to avoid a repeat of 2010.

Sorry, but that simply isn't the case, even in 2010. There was once an ongoing family emergency prior to 2010 during our family seder, when a friend of a cousin who was supposed to come as a guest did not show up, was not in touch, and we had to track down where she was. Despite the holiday, people were going from the table to the kitchen as necessary to make phone calls and figure out where this person was while the seder was in progress.

Also, Jewish law requires one to go to work if lives are at risk, even on the Sabbath or a holiday where work is otherwise not permitted. I know of Orthodox Jewish MTA employees who keep the Sabbath and have been on the verge of going in to work on Shabbat due to weather situations, no questions asked.

Any true adherent to their faith would realize that being in touch with work in that sort of situation is a necessity and would find a way to do it.
