|
Posted by heypaul on Tue Jan 27 06:59:20 2015 I predict the subway will reopen unofficially at 10 AM, without any fanfare, as if nothing had happened. |

And I suspect will face internal pressure from key donors to NEVER shut down the underground portion again UNLESS we have a Sandy-like situation. This to me was all about protecting a 2020 or '24 Presidential bid where if the MTA had messed up and a lawsuit happened, it would be against Cuomo in advertising (and like it or not, politics are that cutthroat now even if no one wants to admit it). |

Will you STOP already with 2020 and 2024? Only the most ideologically petty people running against Cuomo would hold it against him. Only the most ideologically petty people like to bring up the distant past against their opponents. Why? Because their own campaigns don't have much substance to begin with. |

I dunno, on Sunday night the NWS briefer down here said the range of forecasts included snow amounts between 3 and 24 inches of accumulation, depending on where the storm strengthened, and that the low end of the range was most likely. The media decided to go with the upper end of that range, neglecting to mention the little detail about geography. In the end we got maybe 3". Some of the forecasters were pretty close, they just don't get time in front of the camera. |

Cuomo is taking a beating up here locally for closing the Thruway despite less snowfall than we got Saturday morning. Safe to assume those in the city will do the same thing for closing down the MTA. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. |

He's taking a beating because to all appearances he went with the forecasts as purveyed by the media, as opposed to something from NWS with some background to it. You're going to be damned if you ignorantly make decisions based on flawed information. |

At 9 PM last night, NWS was still predicting 17 to 27 inches for NYC. |

"... based on flawed information"But in storm situations like this, you don't know that the information is flawed until after the fact. There were several computer models that predicted that NYC was going to get buried. DeB & Andy Boy went with that, thus the NYC shutdown. Now we have to deal with a"cry wolf" syndorme, inasmuch next time there is a big storm on the horizon (in NYC) and the forecast says take cover, the common-folk react, "yeah right, we remember last time & you blew it". Thats when you'll see people get hurt...big time. |
