In planning school we were taught that anything think-able is possible in a completely fantasy world were budgets, time, money and manpower are unlimited, always available, and the pesky people were not in the way!

Unfortunately the real world simply does not operate that way - planners need the consent, advice and the FUNDS that come from the PEOPLE to get things done. In addition, as anyone who has played SIM-City knows it is the structures that were built and put in place (that seemed like a good idea at the time) that often provide the most difficulty when it comes to putting in new stuff that happen to be a good idea right now.

Let's see, the MTA does not have the funding for this new LGA Airport connector, and simply does not have half of the money it needs for its own capital budget. Translation - NO MONEY THERE.

Let's see, the Port Authority has its hands full with the WTC, Gov Christie and a new extension to Newark Airport. Translation - NO MONEY THERE.

Let's see, the federal government will give money for airport connection transit-like systems - to directly connect transit to airports, but not for general public transit expansion. Translation - THERE IS MONEY THERE BUT ONLY ON THEIR TERMS.

Rats! We can't "DO" whatever "we" want because there are restrictions and limitations! Rats!

What's the basic rules? Simple - those with the funds get to determine the rules, and how their money will be used.

Unless you can come up with your own money to do what you want!

NO MONEY? Welcome to planning 101.

Mike

If it won't be faster, then agreed, there's no point. Adding to the problem, I'd perhaps say put it on the new ferry proposed to serve Astoria Cove to help with the operating cost. So now the route would be LGA-Astoria Cove-34th St-Pier 11 and perhaps a stop at either Fulton Ferry or Atlantic Av. If Fulton, that would be made before Pier 11 and if Atlantic Av is chosen that would be after. Would it make sense to thru-route it to Jersey City as well since it might be picking up commuters from Manhattan heading there?

Yup, I've been saying the same thing. No way the 7 train is handling the influx on its own. Astoria Cove developers are proposing a ferry to solve the mobility problem there, but that's much closer to Manhattan CBD.

I think something similar to JFK Airtrain would be an acceptable solution. Run it Jamaica-Willets Pt-LGA and then to either Jackson Hts or Astoria.

Astoria pros/cons: Less crowding but only 1 service
Jackson Hts pros/cons: Vast array of services offering far greater coverage throughout Manhattan as well as Queens, but way overcrowded already

Jamaica extension is for both connections to the LIRR and for the sake of it being able to use the existing airtrain support facilities at JFK.

I was just trying to lay out facts, some of which support part of your statement. I think where we might differ is on the term "several" million. I see an increase of a few million as much more likely than several. So I guess I'm partially agreeing.....

???

I would use both "few" or "several" to mean 2 to 4, or maybe 5 if stretching it. :)

If you add more stops, the ferry will be slower, though.

I didn't come up with the increase estimates - the PANYNJ did. It's in the article.

I'm not into "blaming" regular folks, not my style. But I always treat the PA with an extra degree of skepticism. Their track record has earned it for them!

Well they are spending the money to build a terminal to handle that many more passengers. I don't think they are in the business of overbuilding terminals.

Yes, but I'm saying add Jersey City on the tail end, or Brooklyn as well. It could be dropping off at 34th from LGA and also picking up customers headed to Jersey City. Same with Pier 11
