Second Avenue Subway is three-quarters of the way done

The first phase of the Second Avenue Subway is three-quarters of the way done now that construction crews have finished the shell for the 86th Street station, the MTA announced Thursday.

Excavating the bedrock, installing concrete lining and utility work took more than three years and $332 million to finish, bringing the entire first phase of the Second Avenue subway to 76% complete.
The station now needs heating, ventilation and air conditioning work, elevator and escalators and architectural finishes.

MTA officials this week said the new subway line that will bring the Q train up Second Avenue to 96th Street is still slated to be ready for service December 2016.

Yup. So are the shells for the 72nd St. and 96th St. stations also complete, or is there still excavation to be done at those sites?

86th has been the slowest going of the stations. 72 has been done for a bit, and 96 for a long time.

They could look into a DBOM or DBM concession so that contractors don't inflate the price of construction. They could also start the MTA Construction Company to control costs if they have to.

Obvious question- why hasn't this been done? The MTA just keeps on pissing away the public's money on projects that could have been built much simpler.

You could check out the DBM result in Vancouver where the cost overruns gave the airport line inadequate short platforms, very short trains, and a single track terminal, all of which cripple the ridership.

I'm not sure, but the MTA has so much work that needs to be done that I think they might be able to justify an in-house construction crew dedicated to rehab and system expansion.

If I had my way, the line would have been 4-tracks and all the stations would look like regular B division stations - like the 1968-vintage 57th street-6 avenue.

So we should a four track subway for line that won't even see 15 tph? Operate at 30 tph on SAS, and maybe you'll deserve your extra two tracks.

The MTA just keeps on pissing away the public's money on projects that could have been built much simpler.

Allegedly, the fight that the MTA had over the construction of the 63rd Street Line near the Central Park Zoo was enough to avoid cut and cover construction for the future.

FWIW, if you're going to go with deep bore construction, I'd argue that going with a narrower station footprint so you're not digging big caves underground is probably key to keeping costs low. Something like this with elevators to the top would probably be more ideal:

Even if NYCTA & MTACC won't go for that arrangement, note how RATP in Paris still builds stations to low clearances compared to our choice in aping WMATA's station designs:

That station is nearly two years old.
