PHOTOS: Muni Heritage Weekend, Part 2C

On November 1 and 2, 2014, the San Francisco Municipal Railway hosted its third annual Muni Heritage Weekend.

This is a weekend where Muni brings out a slew of historic streetcars, cable cars, trolley coaches and motor buses that don't normally run during the year. Special services and displays are offered. The historic transit booster organization Market Street Railway was heavily involved in promoting this weekend.

This year, such treasures as Muni A-Type 1, its very first streetcar from 1912, 578S, built in 1895, and its newest Blackpool "Boat" tram, car 233, were in service or on display. Among the buses and trolley coaches used were a 1950 Marmon-Herrington trolleybus, a "Baby White" from 1938, a GMC Fishbowl form 1969, and others. And an original O'Farrell, Jones & Hyde cable car operated on the California Street line.

This was also the first Heritage Weekend that I was able to attend. I missed the first two years due to Superstorm Sandy in 2012 and my father's death in 2013.

There are many aspects of Heritage Weekend I will cover with these pics. Some of these are routine operations. So sit back, enjoy the ride!

Part 2C, Sunday, November 2, 2014--More general line views, and Muni's newest "Boat" tram, 233, and the other one, 228, together.

233's seats were freshly painted. It had been in the Paint Shop the past Friday, so its appearance for Heritage Weekend was iffy. But it made it. It was only for display.

The other Boat arrives.

233 had to get out of the way of a PCC that was set to pull in, so it moved onto the inbound track on Don Chee Way, setting up…

...a side-by-side comparison between the two Boats.

The operator of 1008 didn't get relieved, so he's pulling in.

Side-by-side on The Embarcadero, with 1009 (Dallas) turning in the background. HDR image.

And another one.

Meanwhile, there were other things to do besides getting seasick. So I started walking over to Cal and Drumm to catch Cable Car 42. Along the way, 1969-built GMC 3287 was laying over on Steuart Street.

It was a bit of a wait for Car 42 to return, so I shot other things, like Flyer E800 trolley coach 5300…

…and Marmon 776…

…and Baby White 042.

This shot highlights the splendid 1920s architecture of two Financial District Buildings--the Matson Building, and the PG&E building. The presence of PCC 1079 (Detroit) is almost an afterthought.

So finally O'Farrell, Jones and Hyde cable car 42 arrives.

It's still a long layover (because of the way the line is configured--no layover at the outer terminal), so I take 42's leader up Nob Hill and wait for it to come up. I had just enough of a light window to catch it passing the Fairmont.

And then I catch it back down. That's Grace Cathedral in the background.

When I get back down, I find that Boat 233 is going to be pulling in. So I have to rush to take Muni Metro out to Church Station to try to get a shot there. Success!

233 is followed in rapid succession by 1009 (Dallas) and 1807 (Milan yellow/white).

I then took the Cleveland car down to 9th Street, where the "Red Carpet" is present. This red pavement indicates that these lanes are for transit and taxis only--no private autos or trucks. Inbound, it goes from 12th/Franklin to 5th. Outbound, from 8th to 11th/Van Ness.

1011 (Market Street Railway) gets the Red Carpet treatment…

…as does 1061 (Pacific Electric)…

…and 1009 (Dallas).

Following these, I took my last F-Line car ride, and my only ride on a Milano this visit. This is the interior of Milano 1807, showing the newly-installed surveillance cameras in the ceiling.

One that I forgot about from Saturday:

This one comes under the title of "Skipping A Generation." New Flyer Xcelsior diesel-hybrid 8634, which went into service last year, meets 1950 Marmon-Herrington trolley coach 776 on Steuart Street.

I hope you enjoyed this series of photos from Muni's Heritage Weekend!

Next: Tucson.

Remember, 1009 (Dallas, left) and 1011 (Market Street Railway) looked like this in 2010, before they went for remanufacture at Brookville.

Loved all the photos you had posted here for the Muni Heritage Weekend in all the two main parts and subparts. The images with GMC #3287 was the one that got my attention the most, because when I made my first visit to SF in 1971, that red/yellow paint scheme on those "Fishbowls" I remembered so well.
