Posted by milantram on Tue Nov 25 11:42:08 2014 On November 1 and 2, 2014, the San Francisco Municipal Railway hosted its third annual Muni Heritage Weekend.This is a weekend where Muni brings out a slew of historic streetcars, cable cars, trolley coaches and motor buses that don't normally run during the year. Special services and displays are offered. The historic transit booster organization Market Street Railway was heavily involved in promoting this weekend. This year, such treasures as Muni A-Type 1, its very first streetcar from 1912, 578S, built in 1895, and its newest Blackpool "Boat" tram, car 233, were in service or on display. Among the buses and trolley coaches used were a 1950 Marmon-Herrington trolleybus, a "Baby White" from 1938, a GMC Fishbowl form 1969, and others. And an original O'Farrell, Jones & Hyde cable car operated on the California Street line. This was also the first Heritage Weekend that I was able to attend. I missed the first two years due to Superstorm Sandy in 2012 and my father's death in 2013. There are many aspects of Heritage Weekend I will cover with these pics. Some of these are routine operations. So sit back, enjoy the ride! Part 2A, Sunday, November 2, 2014--The morning pullout from Metro East along the T-Line and MMX, but this time in daylight. On Sunday, the region reverted to Pacific Standard Time. This permitted some daylight captures of F-Line pullouts. However, because the Muni Metro Subways doesn't open until 8:00am on Sundays (thanks to BART), I had to come the back way, via the outer part of the T-Line. From where I was staying, I had to take a 29-Sunset bus over to the T-Early Morning Bus. I got off at UCSF/Mission Bay on the T-Line to start shooting.  First along was this 2-car N-Judah pullout. The N-line ridership is so heavy, 2-car trains are required, even on Sundays. The light fixtures, which look like pterodactyls, are typical along the T-Line.   First F-Line pullout I saw was PCC 1059 (Boston). Also at UCSF/Mission Bay.   Next car along (after several Bredas) was "Torpedo" 1006 (Muni Wings).   For the next series of shots, I took a Breda up to 4th and Kind Station and walked back to the 4th Street Bridge, aka the Peter Maloney Bridge, which crosses Mission Creek. 1079 Detroit) crosses the bridge.  And a T-Line Breda crosses in this side view, offering a nice scene of the walkway along the creek.  And Pacific Electric 1061 at 4th and Channel. All of these apartment buildings are brand new, built within the last year. Amazing! HDR photo.  The motorman, a friend of mine, let me ride up to my next stop, Brannan Station.  1063 (Baltimore) was the next pullout, followed by…  …a favorite of the fleet, "Torpedo" 1011 (Market Street Railway fantasy paint scheme).  With the Bay Bridge in the background.  While waiting for the next F-line pullout car to come along, I got this side view at the station. The canopies are typical of Muni Metro Extension (MMX) stations. MMX opened in 1998.  This train then passed the next pullout car, 1077 (Birmingham), at Embarcadero/Townsend.  And then, Old Number One arrived! (Muni's very first streetcar, built in 1912.) This vintage car was the only active one based at Metro East.  The motorman was a fellow I trained on Car 1 back in 2003. He was ecstatic! Normally, he works Muni Metro. So I rode with him to Folsom Station. HDR image.  Sepia-tone image at Folsom Station. PCC 1070's following.  Car 1 moves onto the E-Line Connector. The tracks on the left lead to the Muni Metro subway. The Ferry Building clock had not yet been reset for Standard Time, so it was 9:20am.  PCC 1070 (Newark-PSCT) was the last pullout car I documented. It's at Folsom Station, with its wavy canopy, and the old Hills Bros. Coffee Roastery Building in the background. That concludes the pullout shooting. Nine cars counted!
