An eastbound Hempstead Branch train had its brakes lock up while on the Mainline in the vicinity of Richmond Hills, New York. I was a teenager delivering the Long Island Press in the Cypress Hills section of Brooklyn in those days.It seemed that everyone knew someone who was involved in the accident in some form or another. Thanksgiving 1950 was bot a happy holiday. It was a terrible terrible tragedy ! |

From what I've read, the brakeman on the disabled train failed to properly flag the rear end, and the engineer of the following train probably mistook the disabled train's signal for his own, though no one could ask him afterwards. |
