Continuing with photos of the 110th Anniversary runs of the Lo-Vs on October 26 and 27, 2014.

Part 2A, October 26:

I chose a different vantage point for the pullout--Jackson Avenue. With 5 trains running only every 20 minutes, and 2 trains running approximately every 13 minutes, I figured my chances were good for not getting blocked by an outbound train. Still, it almost happened. First shot's an HDR image.

With a lot of time to spare before heading down to Times Square, I walked down Westchester Avenue to check out the newly painted el structure.

This is what it looked like in 2009.

Arriving Times Square for the first northbound trip of the day…

…and after arriving 96th Street. The train would then head up to just below 103rd Street to lay over and reverse.

The fans in 5483 were whirling…

…but not in 5290.

Later, I rode to 72nd Street for a northbound shot…

...and the Train Of Many Colors arrived southbound. This train operated on Sunday only, providing half-hourly service between Times Square and 96th with vintage trains. R36WF 9587 was on the point.

So I waited for the TOMC to come back, with R33 9206 leading, whence I boarded for my one and only ride on these "Lo-V Replacement Cars", up to 96th Street.

One final shot of the Lo-Vs at Times Square–a fisheye view–before calling it a day.

Part 2B, October 27:

Because of a delayed inbound Metro-North train and a MetroCard snafu, I missed the first northbound Lo-V run, so had to settle for a southbound ride initially. I used this day to get material that I didn't get a chance to cover the day before.

Being that this was the 110th Anniversary, and the Lo-Vs were running on the original first line, I took this shot of some of the original–and not-so-original–tilework at 96th Street.

Unlike on Sunday, the arrival of the special was displayed on the electronic screens throughout the station. on the downtown side.

The train arrives. First, the original as-shot version…

…then, with the "Ocean Ripple" effect.

Another spot I didn't cover on Sunday was inbound 72nd Street, with its wide-open, pole-free south end of the platform. Here 5292 gets snapped by an iPhone. Of course, there weren't iPhones in 1904!

At Times Square, another iPhone user shares her photo with a friend. Was it a selfie?

Of course, I couldn't rest my own selfie…

Another thing I did was to get a couple of shots from the opposite platform, like here at 96th Street.

Now for the pull-in run: (Yeah, I know, that's Muni's terminology--what can I say, I'm ex-Muni, not all familiar with NYCTA terminology.) My plan was to shoot at either Freeman, 174th or West Farms Square. So I took a 2 Bronx-bound. Well, at 3rd Avenue, the C/R announced that our train would be going express all the way to E. 180th Street because of a disabled train at Jackson Avenue. So that threw my plans of using the crossunder at West Farms Square out the window. It also meant having to climb over the center track at E. 180th Street and cross to the downtown side. Why there were no orders for the C/R to open doors on both sides is beyond me, but that's a story for another day. With timely connections, I could still make it to 174th to shoot (The light situation at Freeman sucked.). Such was not to be, so I had to settle for West Farms Square/Tremont, and on the wrong sun side. (Side note: Back in my childhood days, this station was called 177th Street.)

Approaching West Farms.

Passing West Farms. This is a sepia-tone image, with the train and signals in original color, high-contrast.

HDR "Painterly" image. Yes, the sky actually looked like that!

It was a great Lo-V 110th Anniversary celebration! You must, however, forgive me for my rather derisive attitude toward the SMEE cars that comprised the TOMC that operated on Sunday, but I have a very valid reason, and that is that these cars replaced my beloved Lo-Vs. In a sense, they erased vivid memories without necessarily improving the subway experience.

In the meantime, please enjoy these 110th Anniversary pictures!

Next: Two Days of Muni's Heritage Weekend. Stay tuned.

I managed to catch the last TOMC run on Sunday after flying in and checking in at my hotel. On Monday, I rode on every round trip. Drained my camcorder battery dry, too.

Maestro Pietro, these HDR pix are very 1960s. What was your camera smoking?
