Plenty of seats available...

From the Newsday article preview:

No passengers were on the first inbound train at 6:50 a.m., and one person was on the train's return to West Hempstead at 8:06 a.m.

Just one passenger headed out on the second train from the West Hempstead...

4-1/2 years of no service, and it will take time to get back into people's patterns.

Yup the old, quasi-erratic schedule could have filled 2 cars pretty well... they usually opened 4 so it was quite comfortable

Maybe someone wanted to use a middle seat as long as no one was on either side.

usual lament: if only it connected to a re-built line up to mineola.but i suppose a true north-south cross island rail transit line will have to wait until the route 110 three track el is built from main street, huntington to merrick road, amityville. which will connect at republic with the franklin avenue-hempstead turnpike four track subway running from republic to mineola lirr. so there.

No, what's needed is hourly thru service. On weekends, the Hempstead line should be routed into NYP and the WH line should run hourly to Atlantic Terminal.

I agree; WH extension should run via Saint Albans to give that station hourly service (it is currently the only one within NYC that sees bihourly weekend service).

I'm not 100% sure, but the track configuration prevents that.

Any service from east of Valley Stream can take either the Montauk or Atlantic branches.

They destroyed any weekend service the line had by taking it away. It will take time to rebuild it.
Personally, I think they would have been better to build the east of Greenport service with usable service. It's completely impossible to use with the so few trains they run there. There IS a market to build there.
On West Hempstead, there are other options available nearby.

It's not either/or. Killing West Hempstead service wouldn't make them more willing to provide more service elsewhere.

St. Albans is currently being served by Babylon branch trains even though it's on the West Hempstead timetable.

Prevents, no, Makes more difficult, yes. Thru trains from WH can use both the Atlantic and Montauk branches (and do).

I'm well aware. I figured bihourly Babs service + bihourly West Hemp service = hourly St. Albans service. Either that or have Babs trains stop there once an hour...

If the WH trains become thru trains, is it necessary for them to continue serving Valley Stream? (I'm assuming track conflicts are present only in the case of trains making that stop?)

Actually......they should have connected it to the Hempstead line and run it as a one track loop line off peak in a clockwise pattern.

They can do whatever they want with routings and stops at Valley and/or St ALbans.

In the late 1990's, after 25 years, Long Beach was promoted to a New York branch, and Far Rockaway again ran thru to Brooklyn, hourly, on weekends.

Perhaps it is time for another promotion, and relieve Babylon trains of a nuisance stop.
