Tuscarora Almanac - November 22, 1967 - The Book of Last Runs

Today marks the last day of the Hoboken-Barclay Street Ferry which was operated by the Erie-Lackawanna Railroad and which began service in 1821. Two boats were in service today, both Lackawanna veterans, ELMIRA and LACKAWANNA.

The LACKAWANNA was built at the Thomas S Marvel Shipyard in Newburgh, New York in 1891. She was originally the HAMBURG and later the CHATHAM. She was built as a coal-fired steamboat built was converted to diesel propulsion in 1949. The only railroad-operated ferry on the Hudson to be so converted.

The other boat in service was the ELMIRA which was built in 1905 by the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company.

The ELMIRA made the last “Official “ crossing from Barclay Street to Hoboken, but there were so many last riders that the LACKAWANNA was dispatched for one more trip.

Why did ferry boats then last so much longer than the ones we have now?

1. With substantially wood superstructures GOs were an ongoing thing. And major components such as the power plant could be replaced.

2. Necessity. Purchsing new giant ferries for an increasing obsolescent service was much more expensive than keeping the old beasts. In their last years it was an open question when these boats would fail inspection.

The Hudson River railroad ferries served two separate markets. The first was of course the passengers who rode their trains. The second was people and vehicles that simply wanted to get from one side of the river to the other. When the Holland Tunnel opened in 1927 it began to drain that traffic off the boats. By the time the boats would have been due for replacement, say sometime in the early 1950's the railroads wanted out of the passenger business (ferry as well as trains). There simply wasn't any money in the budget to buy new boats so they kept the old ones in service.

BTW Three of the ferryboats still operating today are at or over the fifty year mark:
Lt.Samuel S.Coursen - 58

Micheal Cosgrove - 53

John F.Kennedy - 49

My dad used to take the ferry to Manhattan over from Hoboken as an alternate to the H&M/PATH. I do remember him taking my brother and I on the E-L ferry at least once.

The ferry was a civilized way to commute. For ten minutes you could relax with a cope of coffee and plan your day. Try doing that on a PATH train.
