Tuscarora Almanac - November 22, 1950 - The Book of Wrecks

One of the worst collisions in the history of the Long Island Railroad occurred on Thanksgiving Eve during the PM Rush. An eastbound Hempstead Branch train had its brakes lock up while on the Mainline in the vicinity of Richmond Hills, New York. It was struck from behind by a twelve car Babylon Express . 79 passengers were killed and over 300 injured.

I was a teenager delivering the Long Island Press in the Cypress Hills section of Brooklyn in those days.

It seemed that everyone knew someone who was involved in the accident in some form or another.

Thanksgiving 1950 was bot a happy holiday.

It was a terrible terrible tragedy !

From what I've read, the brakeman on the disabled train failed to properly flag the rear end, and the engineer of the following train probably mistook the disabled train's signal for his own, though no one could ask him afterwards.

If this was one of the worst in LIRR history, what was the worst?

In terms of lives lost this was the worst. Earlier in February 1950 there was a head end collision that killed over thirty.

Thus mandating the installation of cab signals.
I remember hearing them when I was a kid riding in the 1st car of an MP-54. The cab signals were actually small whistles

And then less than three months later, the PRR would have the The Broker disaster...a very unsettling period of time to be a commuter...

I just looked it up - man, that was a mess. And it had to happen to an overcrowded train.
