And the weeping, wailing and gnashing of teeth began. It has yet to cease.

And as the song goes "Part of my childhood died. Just died."

The fall of Brooklyn streetcars was dramatically swift. When I was born in 1946 the system was pretty much intact. The year I was 5 years old the entire system was gone except 3 lines (Church, McDonald, Coney Island) -- (4 if you considered Church to 16th Avenue a separate line -- it once was). The year I turned 9 Coney Island Avenue was gone, and I was just 10 when this event ended it all.

Often overlooked is that the 23-Cortelyou Road trolley bus, the original line in Brooklyn, ended on the same date as the trolleys.

Now there is no B23 at all.

Really? They must have left the overhead wires standing until at least the mid 1950's, as I recall seeing them. Did they run a trolley bus?

Bergen Street was a trolley bus, yes. It lasted until 1960.

I remember the single wire above Church Avenue lasted for a while after that, since I can remember it at all. The tracks though were paved over. When I went to JHS (Walt Whitman) I was always struck by how many buses would be running on Church Avenue, it seemed like a non-stop flow. It still does.

And on a related topic, I was in Philly last week and saw a PCC on Girard as I was crossing under on I-76. This was my first running PCC sighting since I rode them in Newark with my then 3 or 4 year old son almost 20 years ago. The 3 (now just 1) by the Fairway don't count. It wasn't such a great idea back when first proposed, but now the Red Hook trolley would have been a great addition to the neighborhood. When I pointed the Girard PCC out to my daughter she just shrugged. She didn't make the connection that it was the same car as the dilapidated Fairway ones.
