Posted by Gold_12th on Thu Oct 23 11:52:12 2014 @freddyalva_nyc on instagram (10-7-2014) Asics is opening a flagship store in Times Square and shut down 42nd Street to move an old subway car that was found in the Mohave Desert into the building. After three hours, two fork lifts, and dozens of construction workers, it was installed. The store opens this month on 42nd St. between Broadway and 6th Avenue. http://www.vh1.com/celebrity/2014-10-07/asics-installs-subway-car-in-flagship-store-first-dibs/ |

Man this is crazy, no one in the railfan community knew this car still exists, kinda like the R9 that was found in Florida a couple of years ago. Makes you wonder how many random retired NYC subway cars are out there that we don't know about. |

Here's a story about 3 subway cars, each cut in half and each modified to look like an R32. Watch the video and you'll note that one of the cars is numbered 8394, although it doesn't look like the original number plate.Another 8394? |

That place looks like a foamer goldmine, old SMEE cars, a random New Flyer LF bus, plus some RTSs, no wonder the owner of it wants to keep the location secret lol. Pretty cool though, reminds of the commercial airline scrap yard in New Mexico.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iOEyz_gsr_s&index=38&list=LLAklbejWXPIlr79j80ewToQ |

There is actually a simpler way to get an R27/30 to look a lot like an R-32 and it had been used previously. After the North Shore interurban got the Electroliners, the North Shore, painted the lower portions of a small group of its standard cars in a silver color with shading that made it look almost exactly like corrugated stainless steel. These cars were called "Silverliners" and were intended for use in Electroliner service when one of the actual Electroliners was out of service for maintenance or repair. Not that the MTA would have wanted to go to the expense but it could have done something similar with its LAHT fleet to make all the cars look more uniform instead of the redbird scheme which quite frankly I never liked. Whether you like my suggestion or not, try to imagine if you will an R-36 looking very similar to an IRT sized R-32 or an R-30looking somewhat like an R-32 with drop sash windows. |

Whether or not it is the original 8394, the graffiti was probably added to give the desired atmosphere. And while the story describes it as "an old subway car", we don't really know yet if it is a whole car or just part of one. |

I stopped by the store a while ago - there is only half a car.The sign above the car says that it was "restored to its former glory". How can that be when it is covered in graffitti? IMHO - to use the car (half car) in that condition is an insult. |

I guess someone grabbed the real controls either honestly or otherwise. Either that or maybe the MTA itself kept them for use on other equipment that might need that type of controller and brake valve. |

Considering that the car parts went to Hollywood, you'd think they'd try a little harder. And love that middle stand. I'll bet that opens the doors. LOL! |
