I always remembered 86th St looking like this:

I haven't been down there in about 10 years, and notice that they recently (2011) tiled the station, in a retro reproduction type of tile, and it looks quite attractive aside from the 86 monograms which give it away that it's not original:

My question is, did this station ever have tiles? And if it did, when were they removed and why? I can't seem to find any historic photos showing tiles, the only one I have been able to come up with was from 2009, which shows it had some tiles at one end of the station:

Any information on it?

Another question: does putting tiles on a wall like that serve any functional purpose, or is it strictly decorative?

They reflect light and make the station brighter and more inviting.
