Question: Express Tracks below Fort Hamilton Parkway station

I just received an email, asking me to read the Wikipedia article on the Fort. Hamilton Parkway Station (F/G). The email said it contined the following information about bellmouth provisions for the IND second system.

Quote:

"South of [Fort Hamilton Parkway} station, on the express tracks on the lower level, there are bellmouths for a proposed Fort Hamilton Parkway line. One line would have terminated at 86th Street, and the other line would split away from the mainline, and would have run to Staten Island. These lines were planned as part of the IND Second System."

Though these tracks are unused for regular service, the tracks have been used for fantrips and other non-revenue moves.

Can anyone confirm the existence of these bellmouths? Either from looking out the front window over this section of tracks, or viewed/ explored them at track level?

If they exist, are they just turnouts, or were they built farther south - perhaps the northbound bellmouth including an under-crossiong beneath the southbound track?
Thanks.

AFAIK there are no bellmouths in the express tracks between 7th Ave and Church Ave. [and yes, I've been through there over the years on rerouted F trains.]

On the Wikipedia website, for the "Proposed expansion of the New York City Subway" for the IND lines, here's the useful quote:

"(1939 plan) A line splitting from the South Brooklyn (Culver) Line at Fort Hamilton Parkway, and running under Fort Hamilton Parkway to end at 86th Street. A branch would split to run under Ovington Avenue and Senator Street, with a tunnel under the Narrows to Staten Island at the St. George Terminal. The line would split, with the north branch ending at Westervelt Avenue around Hamilton Avenue, and the south branch ending at Grant Street around St. Pauls Street. It was presumably designed this way to provide future service to both the Main Line and North Shore Staten Island Railway lines. The Staten Island Tunnel commenced construction in the 1920s, but was not completed."

Of course this idea, and many others, were not built - the entire Wikipedia page is a fascinating look at the various proposals over the decades.

Thanks for including the quote.

I have looked over this article during the last day or so. The proposals were quite extensive, and would really have changed not only the way people commuted in NY, but also would have influenced development.

When I've been on the Belt east of the airport, I always look north at those residential areas and think, how different they would be if those IND lines beyond Euclid Ave. (route on Brinckerhoff Ave. etc.) had been constructed - people would, for the most part have a one seat ride to Manhattan, instead of being in a transitless area, and having to depend on busses to take them East to Euclid, or north to the stations on Liberty Ave.

Then it sounds like the author of the article must have gotten this information second hand maybe, and then used it without vetting it.
Thanks.

There was also talk of connecting the Ft Hamilton Pkwy tunnel to the West End line. I would have loved to see those subway-to-tunnel ramps!

I heard about that...it could help by removing West End services from the Dekalb/4th ave congestion problem.

The intended plan had the West End leaving 9th ave as a subway, not EL,to meet the new route under Tenth avenue/Ft Hamilton Pkg...
