The new black MetroCard

Certain MetroCards now feature ads for Mount Sinai and NYU Langone Medical Center, the first hospitals to buy space on the tiny fare card.

Mount Sinai purchased 50,000 cards, advertising its urgent care site on the card's back.

The cards hit two Upper Manhattan subway stops last week.

NYU Langone Medical Center purchased 1 million MetroCards, with its ad covering both the front and back.

Those cards became available this week at MetroCard vending machines and several stations in Manhattan.

The MTA began selling ad space on MetroCards in 1995.

The agency started selling space on front of the cards two years ago.

An immigration law firm's ad earlier this year became the first Spanish-language MetroCard ad campaign.

The MTA produces 4 million to 5 million MetroCards every month.

I wonder how much the hospital paid the MTA to run the ad?

I seem to recall that the going rate is about 25 cents per card.

I'm always suspicious of a hospital that feels the need to advertise.

I think black would really make for a snappy looking Metro Card, and if the ad was for something besides a hospital (maybe for a store, or airline, etc.), I'd try to get one.

But somehow, I cringe whenever I hear a hospital advertising, so I'll pass.

That's a million dollars for 5 million cards, get better deal with 15 seconds during the super bowl.

Newkirk Images said "I'm always suspicious of a hospital that feels the need to advertise."

They are a good hospital but I can see your point. Any responsible person would do proper research rather than choosing a hospital based solely on a metrocard ad. But in this case,I'd say it's to build awareness.

I think Dr Zizmor is a f*cking quack but if his 1980's ads on train cars are bringing in revenue to the MTA,who cares. Now if only the MTA can sell ad space on buses and rent out empty store space.

Lou from Brooklyn said "That's a million dollars for 5 million cards, get better deal with 15 seconds during the super bowl.

Let's see, a one time 15 seconds during national Super Bowl where 99% of the audience isn't within reach of your business -OR- place ads on Metrocards where 99% of users are within reach and will see your ad multiple times a day for weeks or months...hmmmmm

I thought they were making a special black MetroCard with perks for subway VIPs like the "secret" American Express Centurion (aka Black Card).

So why don't they put Dolly Parton (I know, a non-New Yorker) on a Metro Card then?

No good reason for suggesting this, just because.... and its very late at night....
