Height was a valid question for my friend who applied to the Reading for a fireman position in 1970. He was disqualified for being too short at five foot five-and-a half inches. The rulebook demanded that a fireman had to be at least 5'6" so he could reach the (steam locomotive) throttle in the highest position should something render the engineer incapable of operating. |

Not really. When I got the MNR application and information package right before I got hired in 2004, they asked a lot of similar questions, with the exception of the questions about the wife and kids. I really don't see the issue. And they do ask if you are a legal U.S. citizen, which I think is a legit question. Why would they risk hiring someone who is here in the country illegally? If something comes of it, and their legality in the country is of issue, and the Company didn't inquire about it, talk about liabilities!! That "L" word is huge nowadays!! |

"Do you belong to any communist organisation?"Well, according to a Congressional investigation of my grandfather in the 1950s, the US Army is/was a "communist organisation." I'm surprised they didn't ask the applicant's race— though I guess requiring it to be filled out in person makes that redundant. |
