A staircase on Broadway leading to the 191st St. passage to the 1 train was closed for repairs, beginning in mid-July, and when the fencing that surrounds the cracked steps was removed a month later, commuters were flummoxed to learn that the staircase remained in disrepair. “I don’t know why they would fence off the steps and not do the work,” said Danette Lipten, 57, of Washington Heights, who filed a complaint with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, but said the agency’s response was vague. “It didn’t say when they’re going to do it, or when they’re going to clear the hazard,” she said. In its response to Lipten, the MTA noted that many of the 468 stations in the system are in need of repair, and the agency said it would notify the department overseeing the work. But the worn staircase is maintained by the Department of Transportation, not the MTA, a transit spokeswoman said. The staircase was closed July 12, and repairs to some metal on the steps were slated to be completed by Aug. 12. The Transportation Department was unable to provide any explanation for the apparent goof. "Being in here now reminds me of what New York looked like back in the late 80s," says rider Jaiden Kine. "This is just dirty and gross and it floods sometimes," says rider Andy McKissick. "It's disgusting. It makes me feel like it's not healthy in there," rider Cristina Rivera says. The tunnel—maintained by the Department of Sanitation and the Department of Transportation—is not only an eyesore, but residents say anyone passing through is in danger of crossing paths with speeding bikes. "They come flying down that ramp there and they don't care who's walking by. They don't slow down, they just keep going, and it's just scary," Rivera says. "I saw a kid almost hit somebody the other day when he zoomed around the corner," McKissick says. Residents say their daily commute would feel a lot safer if only the city would make minimal repairs. "I would like to see the graffiti cleaned up, re-painted and someone there actually watching the tunnel," Rivera says. We contacted the Sanitation Department about the litter and a spokeswoman told us the passageway is on a list to be cleaned weekly. We then reached out to DOT and a spokesperson told us the agency inspected lighting in the tunnel in late July. He went on to say that while all lights were functioning and providing appropriate lighting levels, DOT did replace some broken parts to the fixtures. The spokesman said the department is looking to replace these lights with LEDs in the near future as part of a citywide lighting initiative. We also contacted NYPD to ask whether or not bikes are allowed in the tunnel and are waiting to hear back. That ramp is extremely steep and can be a falling hazard during the winter if snow or ice is on it. I walked through that tunnel in late July and kept looking around to make sure no one was about to rob me. Of course, I encountered the one speeding bike going towards the station.Perhaps putting cameras in there, repainting the walls and installing LED lighting could do the trick? They could at least put cameras in there. That stretch of tunnel is very long and makes a good spot for crime. |
