Since there was no internet, and I was pretty unaware that there was even a railfan community, I could not say. Archer Ave was a pretty big deal, since it was accompanied by many other changes and affected over 1 million subway riders. 63rd St, was always sorta mocked as the tunnel to nowhere and even when it opened in 1989, it felt unfinished. The first B train I rode through it that first Sunday morning was empty north of 57th St.Today both of these events would probably crash the Subchat server. |

Today both of these events would probably crash the Subchat server.I'll tell you what, that week before that fateful day in 2016 the SAS opens will get interesting. Not to purposely engage in thread drift, but what exactly were the mega changes that accompanied the Archer opening? I'm sure in terms of NYCTA as a whole, many Queens bus routes were shifted off Hillside and into Jamaica Center, but that's a more localized change. |

Elimination of yellow versions via Broadway - Extension of R service from Forest Hills to 179th St 24/7 (this only lasted 16 months). - Restoration of Brighton express service with the new orange Q - Massive re-organization of the bus services in southeastern Queens to serve the new Jamaica Center terminals. |

Also some buses west of Jamaica had their borough prefixes changed to Q from B, known today as the Q54, Q55, Q56, Q58 and Q59. The Q54 was previously known as the B53, but had it's number changed also.The changes also saw the introduction of the ridiculously short (in both length and lifespan) Q99/"Jamaica Link" |
