My guess, is political correctness for Fulton Transfer boondoggle, i.e. they can spend billions to build it, yet to cheap to add a J train train set to serve it. |

How many people ride the J to lower Manhattan on the weekends? I can't see that being a big destination, not like midtown or the east and west sides, where their cultural and commercial destinations. |

It's really a matter of providing the transfer at Fulton Street. that is the important reason why this is being done.I also wonder if they will be using the relay tracks south of Broad Street or if they will be using the crossover north of the station to turn trains. |

It was a horrible idea to curtail it in the first place. Because of weekend GO's on the F @ Essex and the 4/5 at Brooklyn Bridge it was impossible to take the J to Fulton for the reroutes. |

Greater justification for the massive expenditure on the FTC. That being said, increased ridership on both the J line can sorta justify the move. I believe the sticking point has been the necessity of manning the Broad St tower, wheras Chambers St can be remotely controlled from Essex master. |

Even with availability with transfers to other trains at Canal and Chambers, ridership south of Essex is miniscule. I think they just politically need to serve the Fulton Taj Mahal. |

I understand it was a bad idea, but if any station COULD have been shut down on weekends, it's Broad St. The area around the NYSE is quiet on weekends and there's the 2/3 and the 4/5 a block away. And remember, for several years the J train on weekends terminated at Canal St. That was even worse. |

We're not talking about Fulton St, which should never have been closed to begin with. Not only is that area busy, it's also a transfer point between J riders and PATH, which on weekends is a big deal.I'm happy both stations are going to be open. I am just saying that it's Fulton St that will see 90% of the usage by people remaining on J trains south of Chambers St. |

I agree that the building of the Fulton Transit Center is probably the reason for the newly proposed opening of the Broad Street and Fulton Street stations on the weekends. It could also be that the Master Tower at Essex Street "gained" the ability to control the switches at Broad Street over the years, reducing the economic-manpower reason for the station's closing. Leaving only the Fulton Transit Center, and the amount of trouble for J-train riders "reasons" for the closure or opening of those stations. Many stations seem to operate with only the station booth agent as a presence. Plus the activities even on weekends has changed for the Financial District, and having those stations open can also spur the idea that the area is "alive again" after Hurricane Sandy. There is also possibly another reason - Hurricane Sandy work. The MTA has repeatedly said that there will be more tunnel repair and restoration work to come, after the fixing of the G-train tunnels. That could mean the closures of the Cranberry, Joralemon, or Rutgers Street tunnels for some periods of time. Having the J-train run to its full lengths all of the time - just might help with the transfers between the various lines. Mike |
