That was apparently the last duties of the DL109s, serving on what is now the MBTA services out of South Station.

They ran on the Old Colony branch until 1959, when service on the branch was discontinued.

The 700 series was particularly special because waivers had to be obtained for Alco to build them since they were built during the war and were capable of dual use (passenger and freight). There was a ban on building anything not specifically for the war effort at that time.

I'm not familiar with diesel equipment since I'm more of a transit fan, so I looked up DL-109 in Wikipedia, very detailed article. The wartime issues are covered. Link below:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DL-109

There are links at the bottom of the article, and several other site pages about it if DL-109 is just googled.

Yeah, I agree. At least one should have saved for a museum. That was the same situation with the New Haven EP-5 Jet, electric locomotive. There was a very small fleet of those and none were saved.

My introduction to them was the excellent and detailed book written by Joe Cunningham, pub. by N.J. International Inc. c1991, simply titled: "New Haven EP-5 Jets"
