Chambers St is a relic of an era gone by: An era when it was an important station on an important line. Sic transit gloria mundi. That means a sick transit (station) grows moldy. I think. |

I've said this before, I think the City and the MTA are afraid of just how big a job that rehab would be. Once they start to uncover and try to trace these pipes. or whatever, it's gonna get mighty costly! |

Chambers is so big it would cost a fortune to fully rehab. While as a railfan I'm glad the closed uptown side platform was never covered up (it is a marvelous open-air time capsule) I'm surprised it never has been. Chambers is the 1930's frozen in time. I hope they never fix it. |

It's a huge job. No wonder they don't want to rehab it. You have old water & sewer pipes dating from the pre-1913 opening of the station. Plus, others, dating from the 1938 opening of the Municipal Archives, which incorporated some of the station mezzanine. |

There is no comprehensive set of plans? Even though old, I would think there's at least some idea that there's a pipe or etc in a certain spot minus a stray upgrade/update.I have full confidence though. I have seen enough politicans speeches to know that our multicultural workforce can fix anything that the non-diverse crew of ye olden times made. |

Chambers St. is becoming a disaster area. We're talking about a renovation of Ellis Island proportions here.Oh and speaking of renovations, Denver's Union Station reopened yesterday as the Crawford Hotel. The main waiting room is now a food court similar to the lower level at GCT, but it still functions as a train depot (Amtrak has a ticket window) and once the commuter lines open, it will be Denver's main transit hub. |

Well, the IRT Brooklyn Bridge station is right next it to the west. If you knocked out the wall, both stations would be in plain sight of each other. And to the east, you have never-used trackways that were intended for at least one additional platform. |

You could say that. Amtrak is back, the new underground bus terminal is open for business and you have three light rail lines terminating there.Train Hall has eight tracks. Amtrak uses the middle two, Tracks 4 and 5, and both extend all the way through. The other six tracks have a staggered platform arrangement. Track 1 extends all the way through and has a continuous platform. You could fit at least an eight-car commmuter train on that track. Even the station going up at DIA isn't that long. The Airport Line will be a limited-stop deal, with only six stops in all, and most of those will only accommodate two, maybe three cars. It'll be interesting to see if conductors will be used, if for no other reason than to cut out doors on longer trains. Track 2 extends all the way through, but its platform begins about halfway through. Track 3 ends at bumper posts roughly where the platform for Track 2 begins. On the other side, Track 6 mimics Track 3, Track 7 mimics Track 2 and Track eight ends about 3/4 of the way through. |

My take on what should happen to the Chambers Station to make it a renovated station, which wouldn't involve renovating the whole thing, for platforms and infrastructural that's not needed.Step one, connect the Broad St bound "express" track to the Queens bound "local" track from Fulton St. Yes, I know it would involve a lot, but in the long run, it would be worth it. Step two, put a wall up at the edge of the southbound side of the middle platform, in essence walling off the middle platform from the Broad St bound platform, as well as the whole "Queens side" of the station. Abandon the Queensbound platform, which would now be out of view from the current "Broad St bound" platform. Then renovate the "Broad St bound" platform in a Grecian design similar to the other stations on the line. In essence you would now have a two track, island platform station at Chambers and all the unused, unnecessary platforms and area could be left to fall apart on the other side of the wall, out of view. |

I would also put in a lower ceiling. The high ceiling would be weird with only one platform. It also solves the problem of having to fix the existing ceiling. They would still need to stabilize it, but it wouldn't have to look good. |
