I belong to the Yahoo West Shore discussion group. Here is my post from last month:Our West Shore group has been rather quiet for quite a while. I hope to ride Tonnelle Ave to Exchange Place later this summer and will give a report. The West Shore psgr service (restoration) still does, however, occasionally pop up in the news and on other online venues. We are dealing tho with 99.99% fantasy for many reasons. One reason is that adding any new rail routes is not on the agenda of NJT, aside from some silly studies. I have heard that from many sources. Nonetheless, I would like to make a proposal for the West Shore route. This is fantasy, but on the other hand it is, I think, do-able. HBLR currently goes as far as Tonnelle Ave (West Shore stn was North Bergen), and there is some chance that the line be may extended to Englewood. But from Tonnelle Ave I think that HBLR could be extended from there across the meadows to Dumont, to the state line around Tappan, and even to West Haverstraw. Remember that the row was 4 tracks wide to Dumont. I know that there would be many issues... 1. Bridge across CSX at Tonnelle Ave. 2. CSX freight facilities and activity on both sides of the row across the meadows. 3. Bridge across Overpeck Creek (only 2 tracks wide). 4. Encroachment on the row up to Dumont. 5. Row is only 2 tracks wide north of Dumont. 6. High Tor Tunnel south of Haverstraw. CSX track is centered in the tunnel for clearances. 7. CSX opposition and heavy freight traffic. 8. NIMBYs. 9. Too long for a light rail route? Several light rail lines in the US are long, eg LA to Long Beach is about 20 miles. 10. What else? Comments and polite rebuttals are welcome.–John |

To get to Hoboken, instead of using the Weehawken Tunnel the line could tie into the CSX River Sub (or is it still NYS&W) line in North Bergen and then to the Erie main down near the NJT Bergen Tunnels. |

The River Subdivision and NYSW run parallel to each other down to the Bergen Arches/Tunnel. It'd be tricky to build a connector to either West End or East End, but still not impossible. The last thing that NJT wanted to do was to build a whole new line via the Meadowlands, via Moonachie (somehow) and back across the Hackensack in Little Ferry to Ridgefield Park via a new bridge. |

The original main line is now used by HBLR indeed.Take note of the "busway" craze that goes back decades too. Still plenty of those anachronistic types at NJT up to this day. |
