Amtrak help (especially by the experts)

My son has to be in SUNY Oswego Weds through Thurs for orientation and picking classes for the fall. As much as I'd like to drive him I'm having so many attendance problems with the USPS (I was awol for Passover and Shavuous because I didn't show after they illegally denied religious observance) that if I go sick 3 days I could be suspended.
Both Greyhound and Amtrak go to Syracuse where he's have to catch a bus to Oswego. There are only 3 buses from Syracuse to Oswego that if he misses connections he'd be (excuse my French) in deep doodoo.
My son Arthur DOES NOT LIKE BUSES!! He'd rather take the train. Also if he takes the LIRR he wouldn't have to leave Penn to go to the Port Auth. There are two trains he can take, a 7:15 (63 Mapleleaf) and a 10:20 (281 Empire). How reliable are those trains? I always hear about Amtrak delays. Also, does he have to book in advance? Greyhound on the other hand usually makes their schedules.

I don't know how punctual they are but if he has to be there on time he should take the earlier train and then cool his heels somewhere if the train is even halfway punctual. I once had to be in Toronto at 9 AM and if I wasn't there it would cause me a huge amount of additional time at a future date. So I just aimed to arrive at 1:30 the previous afternoon (ridiculously early) to be sure I'd make it.

Train 64 from Toronto tends to be unpunctual due to US Customs.
Don't even think about taking 48 back. NS delays trains for hours west of Cleveland. However, CSX is known for delaying Amtrak trains west of Schenectady back to Cleveland.

Basically, the Empire "Corridor" , such as it is, sucks as much as it did in the 1970's.

I looked at amtrak.com and found that last week both those trains got into SYR between 20 min and over an hour late. Yesterday train 63 was only 10 minutes late. So...the train could likely be late and I'd take the earlier one of the 2 (both performed equally good/bad). Hope this helps.

Amtrak tickets can be purchased online or purchased from a ticket agent at Penn. Ticket prices increase as bookings increase.

Well, going North/West customs is not in play. The Syracuse station is intermodal, with bus lines right outside, although I'm not sure that is where the Oswego bus originates. That is a very heavy freight stretch, and Schenectady to Buffalo you are at the mercy of CSX. If you can get a train with a cushion of an hour and a half or so before the bus, you are probably pretty safe.

All it takes is time (to learn) and money (to have a car available). Maybe he can drive and Jeff doesn't want to loan him his car.

For someone who's 17-18, not wanting to loan one's car may be a reasonable concern. How well did you drive at that age?

Next month I have a same day 4 1/2 hour connection between the Lake Shore & Empire Builder. I would imagine Amtrak has some confidence a connection will be made otherwise they would have not allowed the booking. I have seen at times the connection is held but what about if I'm like 7 hours late, which I've seen happen? Does Amtrak strand me for a day or do they "put me up"?

NS is doing trackwork in Indiana with a lot of single-tracking. There are often massive delays to both the Capitol Ltd and Lake Shore Ltd's.

The wetsern connections are guaranteed, bit if 49 gets to be 6+ hours late, that only means they'll put you in a hotel for the next day's #7. That can happen if both CSX and NS behave badly on the same trip, and if there are delays upto Albany. The signals tend to go out when they have bad thunderstroms.

449 from Boston is another vulnerability. About 2 weeks ago, 48 ran 11 hour late. Then 449 left Boston 6 hours late, and they did not head west from Albany until they were 6 hours late or about 1am. Western connections we4r missed that trip since they were further delays into Chicago.

Also some colleges do allow freshmen and sophmores to have cars on campus. Don't know if that is the case in this instance.

Also having driven my daughter to SUNY-Buffalo, its a loooong drive and a relief driver is a necessity.

This is why being able to drive is useful.

The other alternative would be to pick schools that are actually on Amtrak.

I've driven between Buffalo and New York City alone.

And I would think car parking rules would be different for orientation than for the academic year.

My parents let me drive their only car to Vermont for a 4-day skiing trip with 3 friends before I was 17. But I can understand other attitudes.

Ha. I gave that some thought. Train to East Glacier Park vs plane to Great Falls, MT. I gave up on the train. 2 days to get there if all goes well but 3 days to get back.

Considerably more expensive, like $200 round trip more. Besides, the east side of Glacier Park is more interesting, and GTF vs Kalispell is almost a wash to there.

The East and West side are geologically and meteorlogicaly very different. It depends on what else you are looking for, or wish to go to up to Waterton.But WHitefish is a nice town to spend some time in.

Jeff, a bit off topic, but the bus service I run served SUNY Oswego last year. I know you said your son HATES buses, and I'm not even too sure we're going to be serving Oswego this year, but either way, keep me in mind just in case when he needs to get back to the island. The service is called Catch-a-Ride, www.vincenttransit.com.

Take the leaf. Amtrak closes the rear cars on some of the upstate Empire trains which sucks for photographs.

Both the Leaf and Empire trains have been running with Business class end of the cafe trailing, so either way, you have to be in BC to get rear views.
