I Couldn't Find Madison Hardware on East 23rd St Today |

Posted by heypaul on Sun Jul 20 15:05:08 2014 I needed some Magne-traction fluid for my Lionel 646 steam engine as the loco's wheels were slipping on level track. I always got it at Madison Hardware, but I couldn't find the store today. Did they move? |

Hi KarlI only put Vaseline on the tight curves to key the wheels from screeching. I should have bought a couple of extra bottles of Magne-traction fluid last time I was at Madison. I'm hoping now that the Firestone toy store in Sheepshead Bay where my father bought the set in the 1950's is still in business. Maybe the have some new old stock lying around. |

A "Firestone toy store" in Sheepshead Bay? I thought we had the only one of those on University Avenue in the Bronx. Actually, the real name of the place was J. Faletta & Sons, or something like that. But everyone called it "Firestone" because it was located in a storefront that had formerly been a Firestone Tire dealership, and had left the big sign above the entrance reading "Firestone" intact. Was the story in Sheepshead Bay similar? |

I just searched Google and came up with some people reminiscing about my area. Firestone was mentioned as selling toys, bikes and Lionel trains. In an old issue of the civil service paper The Leader, it was listed as giving discounts to people looking to buy tires also. We didn't have a car when I was a kid, so I don't remember any car connection. I can visualize the owner though. |

I do have a vague memory of the Bronx Firestone having a tire displayed on the sidewalk at the same time as there were toys and games on the shelves, but I thought I was probably confused about that, since it seems like such an odd combination. Maybe the Bronx Firestone really did sell toys while it was still officially Firestone, and when the Falettas took over, they just dropped the tires and kept the other part of the business. |
