A little while later we rolled past the old depot at Springfield. On a siding was a stripped 2-8-0 steam Consolidation loco, or maybe a 4-8-0:

A little past Springfield we passed a small hard with some abandoned shunters:

PPCS is New Zealand’s largest meat-marketing and processing company, exporting sheepmeat, beef, venison and associated products to more than 60 countries. This engine was purchased in 1982 by PPCS to work at the Islington freezing works. It was donated to the Midland Railway Heritage Trust in 2005, and towed to the group's base at Springfield by a special shunting movement.

Look at what was in the yard:

It would be great to see these restored.

Approaching our destination, Rolleston, we passed a waiting freight:

And a few minutes later we arrived:

And back on board a bus to our ship we went. I hope you enjoyed your trip through the Southern Alps!

Tremendous body of work, Dave, and thanks for sharing the pictures and accompanying text. Now, unless told otherwise, I am just going to assume you made the correct and rational decision to take the boat and then Amtrak or Greyhound back to the Metroplex.

Well...I took the boat to Auckland then flew back to Sydney and later to Seoul, then LAX to DFW upon the wings of a mythical bird.

Glad you enjoyed the pictures!

What were you thinking? What exactly was going through your head when you made that decision? Incredible.
