Interesting service change next weekend on the RVL |

Here's what's interesting: Customers at Union Station (and customers arriving at Union by bus) will board a shuttle train that will take them to Newark Penn Station (NPS). This shuttle train will continue to Secaucus and New York. ONLY during the hours of this project (7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.), RVL customers continuing to Secaucus and New York will not need to transfer at Newark. Looks like the ALP-45DP's will finally get to be used for their original purpose. |

They are mid-day anyway. These weekend trains deadhead back to Newark. They had to get permission from Amtrak to use an extra slot, who normally single-threads the tunnels on weekends. |

In Chicago and D.C., it means a station that served multiple railroads. In New Jersey, it means a station in the town of Union. |

Yeah, so we could have a useless PATH spur to an abandoned waterfront terminal. You're not so detached from reality to kid yourself into thinking a PATH extension would have kept that hovel open, are you? |

Bethlehem PA had a Union Station too; served RDG, B&O and LVRR. Used to be an intermediate stop on the B&O's Washington-Boston service. |

That would not have addressed the forces wanting the Newark Bay Bridge removed. This was the primary reason for the Aldene plan. The CNJ wanting to drop the ferry service from JC was a secondary benefit. |

That's why I would only announce "Union" without saying the word "station" when I worked the RVL. And the computerized announcement does the same... |

Those trains change from electric to diesel or diesel to electric when making the station stop at Newark Penn. They usually do it so quickly, you don't even notice... |

I would have called it "Townley", but the locals wanted it called Union.Whatever, it's the 3rd busiest stop on the RVL. The 7:37am from Raritan lets off about 50 people there, mostly Kean U. students. |

Nah, totally useless unless PATH took over the right-of-way and ran direct rail service to Bayonne. That would have made sense and kept passenger rail service in Bayonne. But the Aldene Plan was more in saving $, not very useful rail lines in my opinion.Vader |

Hate to think what the PA would have spent on that. And since the Aldene Plan involved some very expensive elevation of the Lehigh Line, it would be more likely that a PATH connection to CRRNJ Terminal would have been cheaper overall, what with the pre-existing infrastructure setup.Of course, if NYC didn't have a bug up its petootie in the 19th century over steam locomotives, the waterfront terminals would instead have been in Manhattan proper. (You know; something along the lines of this idea.) |

I think if the H&M was more financially sound, that connection to Communipaw Terminal might have actually happened. I believe there actually was a plan to build a line to Bayonne with a junction just west of the Grove St station. Tunnel portal is there but equipment is placed along the wall. Well, so much for that plan. H&M's only successful extension if I may say was the move from Park Place to Newark-Penn. Port Authority was never interested in rail but in order for the World Trade Center to be built, NJ had to get something in return so bye-bye H&M and HELLOOOOOOO PATH! While your statement has good points, I still believe the PATH in Bayonne would have actually been useful even with a stop at the old CNJ Terminal. Sometimes I still wonder how things would be if Communipaw and Exchange Place terminals still existed today.Vader |
