MTA-related, but barely on topic. :) |

Posted by SelkirkTMO on Sun Apr 20 05:18:02 2014 Thought folks might find this amusing just the same - MTA nabs cab driver. :)http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/oddnews/taxi-driver-accused-of-tailgating-to-avoid-paying-a-whopping--28k-in-tolls-202911384.html Tease: In New York, Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown announced yesterday (PDF) that a taxi driver, 69-year-old Rodolfo Sanchez, has been charged with stealing more than $28,000 from the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) by, “crossing the Robert F. Kennedy (RFK) Bridge and entering the Midtown Tunnel without making a toll payment on more than four thousand separate occasions by ‘piggybacking’ on cars directly in front of his cab between 2012 and 2014.” |

The $$$ that he stole will cover about a fifth (if that) the cost of a taxi medallion, these days. When I was driving a yellow cab for a fleet (Sculls Angles) back in 1973, a taxi medallion cost about 45K. That was serious bucks back then. Now one costs well into 6 figures.Driving a cab in NYC = the worst job on the planet!! |

Yet another reason to convert to high speed toll collection like on the Thruway... harder to pull this off when it's two EZ Pass readers 1/4 mile apart, and everyone's doing 65+... |

Do the lanes Chris is referring to have gates? License plate cameras? Either way he has no idea if the piggybacker has properly paid the toll with E-ZPass or not. Where possible I follow closely behind the car in front of me through E-ZPass lanes because I'm all about getting where I'm going today, not next week. But my piggybacking still involves properly paying the toll via E-ZPass. |

If I follow a car close through the toll, I slow down to make sure I get the greenpaid light . Normally I usually speedy lanes anyway ,no problem! |

If you follow close enough won't the green paid light just stay lit from the car before you? Why slow down so much that there's enough time for the light to go unlit and then light back up for you? |
