Saw them from the Beltway. When I went behind USDA to get a closer look I noticed the 5th car. Was unable to see the number.

I am not even going to speculate as to why it is there.

PS

WMATA's connection to the common carrier railroad network at Greenbelt Yard is now fully restored. Looks like it has seen traffic recently. I think the track work contractor that did the Silver line used the connection to bring in take out their track work building equipment.

When other transit systems start moving to carbon fibre vehicles WMATA's decision to regress back to Stainless Steel will look comical. Hell, even Ford is making the new F-150's out of aluminum.

I'm visiting D.C. for a few days later this week. Any chance I could catch a ride on a 7000 series car somewhere?

Went down there after doing my daily run to Baltimore to check the progress on the Test track and Commissioning Facility. Saw them from the Capitol Beltway, and thought I could get a closer look from the behind the United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service building off Sunnyside Avenue on the other side of the CSX tracks.

Was surprised was the presents of the 5th car, what surprised me even more is the single cars is displaying tail lights. Never seen that before, but then I have never seen a single car from any of the existing married pairs decoupled and standing alone with mounted third rail shoes.

No. What you see is all the 7k cars WMATA has on the property. They are prototypes presently being subjected to an extensive preproduction testing and evaluation program prior to the serial production of the first 64 car option.

The prototypes testing and evaluation program is scheduled to run about 3 months. It began shortly after the prototype set arrived on the property back in late December early January.

Come to think of it, that 5th car might be the first car of that 64 cars option! If it is we might see the first 8 car train of 7k cars put in to revenue service sometime this summer.

MARTA and WMATA use the same load gauge dimensions. That's where the similarity ends, WMATA's cab signal frequencies are different.

The 5th car is 7062. It is the car on the lift in the 7000-Series Factory Tour & Test Drive youtube clip:

It appears to have been delivered to WMATA at least a month ago:
